History of the Land

In the mid 1600s, the Spanish (based out of St. Augustine) founded the province of Apalachee. Franciscan missionaries and Spanish families brought the Faith to the Apalachee Indians of this region. Many Native Americans embraced Christianity and lived in peace with the Spanish. The Spanish missions thrived until the English and their Creek allies destroyed them in 1704.

Patrick Mangan and Ryan Sweeney produced a documentary on the Spanish Missions in Apalachee. The documentary, titled Save Our History, won 2nd place in The History Channel's national contest, Save Our History.
